Carman Lam Brar

Anti-Racism Educator & Consultant

I'm Carman, an educator passionate about creating supportive spaces and engaging workshops to explore themes of race and racism. I am an experienced and skilled facilitator that is comfortable having uncomfortable conversations. I pride myself on creating warm and welcoming environments for groups and individuals of all ages to learn, explore, stumble and grow.

I spent nearly three decades of my life ignoring the impact that race, racism and racialization has had on my own life and am now on a personal journey of dismantling my internalized racism and pushing back against systemic and institutional sources of racism. I am ready and willing to share my skills, knowledge and lived experience with others who want to start their anti-racism journey.

My Story

In 2020, following the murder of George Floyd and in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, I - along with so many others - experienced a racial awakening. Many organizations and corporation were stepping forward to proclaim their commitment to anti-racist practices - but when I asked some of these organizations what that really meant, no one had an answer for me. I saw that these organizations - that people, in general - just wanted to do better when it came to race relations, but they truly had no idea where to start and sometimes their attempts at "helping" the situation were just causing more harm.

I began a period of extensive research to find out for myself what it meant to be anti-racist. I wanted to know how I can implement it in my life and instill these values in my children.

This research led to me to understand how our entire system is steeped in racism and white supremacy - it truly is the air we breathe. I also realized that these racist messages were deeply internalized in my own sense of identity and I have since been slowly and actively healing myself of a lifetime of breathing in these toxic messages.

I want to share the things I have learned with others who are committed and willing to confront their own racism and complicity in the system. I want to help those that really want to do better by showing them how to practice anti-racism in their daily lives and end the lip service. I want to hold the hand of others who may be unshackling themselves from the hold of internalized racism in their own lives. I want to leave this little slice of the world a better place for my children and the generations to come. This is why I created Let's Talk About Race.
